Devvista is a software development and growth agency that builds, migrates and extends Shopify stores for merchants in the United Kingdom. What decides how a UK store performs is mostly outside the theme: VAT settings, pound pricing, payments, and the link to your accounting software. We settle those first, then build.

This page covers what to decide before a build, what we make, how a project runs, a worked cost example in US dollars, and how to tell it worked.

The problem: a store that sells but creates admin every week

A Shopify store can look finished and still cost a UK owner hours each week. Orders arrive and someone retypes them into Xero or Sage. A price reads one way on the product page and another at checkout. A buyer in Dublin or New York sees pounds and leaves.

The cause is usually order of work: the store was built for selling first and for the business around it later. The fix is to settle tax, payments, currency and integrations before the first template exists, then test each with a real order. The sections below follow that order.

VAT and your Shopify store: what to settle before you build

Whether you charge VAT depends on your registration, not on Shopify. According to GOV.UK, you must register for VAT if your taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily below that level. A business based outside the UK must register regardless of turnover if it supplies goods or services to the UK.

On the Shopify side, Shopify's tax page lists the EU and the UK as regions where Shopify Tax is available, and states that tax is your responsibility. Use this table as a checklist for the first call with your accountant.

Question to settleWhere the answer comes from
Are you over the £90,000 VAT threshold, or about to be?GOV.UK guidance and your accountant
Should you register voluntarily?Your accountant, based on what you buy and who you sell to
Do you sell to the UK from outside it?GOV.UK says registration applies regardless of turnover
Will prices show with VAT included?Your decision, tested at product page, cart and checkout
Which tax tool will the store use?Shopify Tax is listed for the UK; confirm in your admin

We do not give tax advice. We build the store to match the answers and test that the numbers on the product page, cart, checkout and order agree.

Payments and pounds, and the question of Ireland, the EU and the US

Shopify counts the United Kingdom among the countries where Shopify Payments works (see its Shopify Payments supported countries page), as long as your business is located in one of them. A company based elsewhere pairs the store with another payment provider, which is worth knowing before the design is signed off.

Cross-border selling runs through Shopify Markets, where currency, availability, theme content, domains, languages and taxes can differ by region. By default converted prices follow the exchange rate, and Shopify's market pricing help explains rounding, which stops a converted price landing on an awkward figure.

Our advice for a UK store: make Ireland and the US separate markets only if you will price, ship and report on them separately. Otherwise let them see converted prices and revisit the decision after six months of real orders.

What we make for UK merchants

Projects tend to fall into one of these shapes.

  • A store built around your catalog. Theme, navigation, checkout and tracking, checked on a development store before any customer sees it.
  • A link to Xero, Sage or Odoo. A small app that posts orders, refunds and payouts through the package's API, so no one retypes them. Details on custom Shopify app development.
  • Stock that agrees everywhere. Inventory moving between Shopify and a warehouse system, with one system named as the truth. We are an official Odoo partner, so Odoo can be planned alongside the store.
  • Trade pricing. Prices and minimums by customer. Shopify limits custom apps with Function APIs to Plus stores (Shopify Functions documentation), so the plan is checked first.
  • Platform moves. WooCommerce, Magento or BigCommerce to Shopify, covered on our migration page.
  • Fixes to an existing store, chosen from your own analytics rather than a checklist.

Moving to Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento or BigCommerce

If you already run a store on a UK domain, keep the domain. Google says that when the domain stays the same you do not need a Change of Address in Search Console for path changes, so the work is the redirect map (Google's site move guidance: map each old URL to its new one, use permanent redirects, keep them for at least a year).

For the platform-specific detail, read our Magento to Shopify migration guide, which includes a table of payment and tax checks for the UK and four other markets.

Six checkpoints from first call to launch

  1. Scoping call. Thirty minutes on catalog size, tools in use and what hurts today, followed by a written summary.
  2. VAT and payments sign-off. Your accountant confirms the VAT treatment, and we record the payment methods and currencies.
  3. Data-flow diagram. One page showing what travels to your accounts or ERP, when, and what happens if a call fails.
  4. Build, week by week. Theme and checkout first, then the app, with a demo on a development store each week.
  5. Awkward-order testing. Part refunds, split shipments and VAT-inclusive baskets, compared against your books.
  6. Switch-over. DNS change, Search Console check, and a first-month review of orders against the old baseline.

What a UK store costs: a worked example

Pricing is either fixed, anywhere from $500 to $100,000 according to complexity, or hourly at $10 to $100 according to the developer. Quotes are in US dollars.

Illustration (an estimate, not a quote). A new store for a UK retailer with 300 products, VAT-inclusive prices and an app that posts orders and refunds to an accounting package, priced at an assumed $40 an hour:

Piece of workHours
Scoping and data-flow design12
Theme, menus and checkout40
Catalog import and spot checks18
Accounting-link app35
Order testing against the books15
Launch and first-month review10
Total130 hours, about $5,200

More products, more systems or custom checkout rules push the hours up. To get your own figure, book a call with your catalog size and tool list.

How to know it worked

Choose three numbers before the build: hours per week your team spends re-entering orders, the gap between Shopify order totals and your books each month, and conversion by country. After launch, check them monthly. A shrinking gap between the store and the books is the clearest sign the accounting link works. If it grows, a rule was missed and we fix it during the handover period.

Who this is for, and who it is not

A good fit: UK merchants with a catalog that Shopify can model, who want fewer manual steps between the store and their accounts. Not a fit: a store that needs a physical presence or an on-site visit, since Devvista works remotely with UK clients and does not have a UK office, and very small stores that Shopify's own tools can handle.

Four things: VAT registration and whether prices show VAT, the payment methods, the currencies you will sell in, and how orders reach your accounts. Settling these first avoids rebuilding the checkout later.

Fixed prices span $500 to $100,000 depending on complexity, and hourly work spans $10 to $100 depending on the developer. The illustration above, a 300-product store with an accounting link, comes to roughly 130 hours or $5,200 at an assumed $40 an hour. Treat it as an estimate.

It follows your VAT registration. GOV.UK says registration is required once taxable turnover passes £90,000 over 12 months or is expected to within 30 days, and optional below that. Your accountant decides, and we then build and test the store to match.

Shopify lists the United Kingdom among supported countries for Shopify Payments, provided the business is located in one of them. A business outside those countries would use a different payment provider.

Yes. We write a small app that uses the accounting package's API to post each order, refund and payout, retry failures and show anything stuck on a screen your team can check.

Yes, using Shopify Markets, which lets currency, product availability, domains, languages and taxes differ by region. Whether each country deserves separate settings depends on how you price, ship and report on it.

Keep it. With the same domain, Google says path changes need no Change of Address in Search Console, so the work narrows to mapping old URLs to new ones and redirecting them permanently.

Not for most. Plus matters when rules must run inside checkout through custom apps with Function APIs, which Shopify restricts to Plus stores. We compare your volumes and needs against the plans and suggest the cheaper one that works.

No. Our work with UK merchants is remote, run through video calls, written specs and a shared project board.
