Devvista is a software development and growth agency. For Australian merchants we build, migrate and extend Shopify stores and tie them to the tools behind the counter: accounts, stock and couriers. GST and Australian-dollar pricing are settled before the first template, because later choices lean on them.
Read on for what to decide first, what we build, how a project runs, a worked cost example and the measures that show it worked.
The problem: the store takes orders, and the back office takes the evenings
Many Australian owners describe the same pattern. The store takes orders during the day, and the evening goes on matching them to stock, to the courier, and to the accounts. When the same sale is typed three times, errors creep in, and GST reporting becomes a monthly argument.
The cause is that each system was added as a quick fix. The fix is to decide which system owns which data, connect them with a small amount of purpose-built software, and test the connections with awkward orders. We start with GST because every other choice depends on it.
GST and your Shopify store: decide this first
The Australian Government's business.gov.au says a business must register for GST once its GST turnover reaches $75,000 or more. Below that, registration is optional, but it brings duties: you add GST to most sales prices, claim GST credits on most business purchases, and lodge activity statements.
On the Shopify side, Shopify's tax page lists Australia under its Basic Tax service and gives no GST detail, and it says tax is your responsibility. So the setting that matters, whether prices show GST-inclusive, is one we configure with you and your accountant, then test at the product page, cart and checkout.
| Decision | Who decides |
|---|---|
| Is your GST turnover $75,000 or more? | You and your accountant, using the business.gov.au guidance |
| Do prices show with GST included? | You, then tested end to end |
| Do overseas customers see the same prices? | A markets decision, covered below |
| Which GST reports does your accountant need from orders? | Your accountant; we build the export |
We do not give tax advice. We make the store match your answers and prove that the totals agree from product page to order.
Payments, and what overseas customers should see
Australia appears on Shopify's list of Shopify Payments countries (Shopify Payments supported countries page), conditional on the business being located in a listed country. A business outside the list needs another payment provider.
For New Zealand or US buyers, Shopify's market pricing help describes automatic conversion at the current rate and optional rounding per market. Whether those buyers get a separate market, with their own prices, shipping rates and tax handling, is a design decision we raise early because it touches the checkout and your reconciliation.
The systems work we take on
- Orders into the books. An app that moves orders and refunds into Xero, MYOB or Odoo through their APIs. See custom Shopify app development.
- One stock number. A single source of truth for inventory across the store, a warehouse and any marketplace listing.
- Courier rules. Shipping rates chosen by weight, destination or product, built into the store or a small app.
- Store builds and rebuilds, checked on a development store before launch.
- Moves from other platforms. WooCommerce, Magento or BigCommerce to Shopify, set out on our migration page.
- Checkout logic. Only Plus stores can run custom apps that contain Shopify Function APIs, per Shopify Functions documentation.
Changing platform without dropping out of search
An existing .com.au address is worth keeping. Only the paths change, so Google asks for no Change of Address; the real task is a URL map that matches every old page to a new one, redirects it permanently, and holds the redirect for a year or longer (Google's site move guidance).
Our Magento to Shopify guide walks through that method and carries a payments-and-tax table that covers Australia.
What an Australian project looks like week to week
- Audit week. We inventory products, apps, couriers, integrations and the pages that earn sales.
- GST and market decisions. Price display and overseas markets are agreed with you and your accountant, then written down.
- Data ownership map. We name which system owns stock, orders, customers and refunds.
- Build and connect. Theme, checkout, shipping rules and the app, demonstrated on a development store.
- Break it on purpose. A GST-inclusive basket, a part refund, a split shipment and an overseas order.
- Go live and compare. Switch over, then compare orders and error counts with the baseline for several weeks.
What it costs: a worked example for an Australian store
We price Australian work two ways: a fixed fee between $500 and $100,000 set by complexity, or an hourly rate between $10 and $100 set by the developer's level. Everything is quoted in US dollars.
Illustration (an estimate, not a quote). An 800-product WooCommerce store moving to Shopify, GST-inclusive prices, plus an app syncing stock and orders with an ERP, at an assumed $40 an hour:
| Piece of work | Hours |
|---|---|
| Audit, GST display, ownership map | 15 |
| Old-to-new URL map and redirects | 20 |
| Product data cleanup and import | 25 |
| Theme, checkout and courier rules | 30 |
| Stock-and-order sync app | 40 |
| Testing and go-live | 20 |
| Total | 150 hours, about $6,000 |
A smaller catalog or no sync lowers the figure. More markets or custom checkout rules raise it.
How to tell it worked
Track three numbers: hours your team spends matching orders to stock and accounts, stock mismatches found each month, and orders that need a manual fix. All three should fall within the first month of the sync running. We review the failed-sync list weekly during that month and fix any missed rule, and we keep the GST lines on orders under watch too, since a mismatch there shows up in your next activity statement.
Where we help most, and where we do not
The best results come from Australian merchants who already have a catalog and a back office they want to connect. Two groups are poorly served: anyone who needs people on site in Australia, because Devvista is remote and has no Australian office, and very small shops that Shopify's own tools can handle.
