Dynamics GP still runs, but the end dates are now fixed: Microsoft stopped licensing GP subscriptions to new customers on April 1, 2026, ends product enhancements, tax updates and technical support on December 31, 2029, and stops security updates on April 30, 2031 (Microsoft).
That leaves time for a calm replacement if you decide in the next year, because every plan has to fit around a year-end close and 1099 season. Devvista is a software development and growth agency and official Odoo partner that moves companies from Dynamics GP and NAV to Odoo. This guide compares Business Central, other ERPs and Odoo fairly, then lays out a migration plan for history and open AR/AP.
01 Dynamics GP End of Life: The Dates That Matter
| Milestone | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| New subscription licenses | Ended April 1, 2026 | New customers can no longer license GP |
| Enhancements, regulatory and tax updates, technical support | End December 31, 2029 | Year-end and tax table updates stop after this date |
| Security updates | End April 30, 2031 | No patches after this date |
Sources: Microsoft Dynamics 365 blog, June 2025 and Microsoft Lifecycle: Dynamics GP, which lists GP’s retirement at the end of 2029. Some partner blogs still quote September 30, 2029 from an earlier announcement; Microsoft’s current pages say December 31, 2029.
The date that bites first for US companies is the last tax update, because payroll and 1099 processing depend on it. In practice that means planning to be live on a new system for the 2030 fiscal year, with the decision made well before.
02 Why a Dynamics GP Replacement Is a Re-Platform, Not an Upgrade
There is no in-place upgrade from GP to anything. Every route, including Microsoft’s own, is a new system with data moved across. What makes GP projects heavy is what grew around it:
- Third-party add-ons for check printing, approvals, EFT, sales tax or field service, each needing an equivalent.
- Dexterity or VBA customizations that encode rules nobody wrote down.
- Reports built in SmartList, SQL views and Management Reporter that finance relies on every month.
- Segmented account strings such as company-department-account, which the new chart of accounts must reproduce.
- Integrations to ecommerce, a WMS or EDI, often through scripts on the GP SQL Server.
List these before you compare vendors. They drive cost and timeline more than the license price does.
03 Business Central, Other ERPs and Odoo: A Fair Comparison
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on GP until 2029 | No project now; time to plan | Shrinking pool of GP add-on vendors and staff; a rushed move later |
| Dynamics 365 Business Central | Microsoft tooling migrates GP master data, open AR/AP, GL summaries and a historical snapshot (Microsoft Learn: migrate Dynamics GP data to Business Central) | Cloud subscription; add-ons still need replacing; Microsoft partner fees |
| Odoo | Accounting, inventory, manufacturing, CRM, ecommerce and field service in one platform; published per-user pricing; hosted or self-hosted | Migration is a partner-led data project, not a built-in wizard; process changes |
| NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Acumatica | Mature mid-market options with strong finance features | Quote-based pricing; compare three-year cost and partner depth |
| Dynamics 365 Finance and SCM | Large, multi-entity, complex operations | Enterprise-level cost and project size |
Business Central has a real head start for GP users: the migration path is built by Microsoft, and the screens will feel familiar to finance staff. Any honest comparison should say that. For how Odoo stacks up against NetSuite in detail, see Odoo vs NetSuite.
04 When Odoo Fits a Company Leaving GP, and When Business Central Is the Better Call
Odoo tends to fit when GP is only the accounting core and the rest of the business runs in other tools: a separate CRM, a warehouse system, a Shopify store, spreadsheets for production. Replacing all of that with one platform is where Odoo’s cost advantage shows, and the Odoo pricing guide gives the license and implementation ranges to budget with.
Business Central tends to be the better call when finance wants the closest match to GP, your company is committed to the Microsoft stack (Power BI, Teams, Azure), and operations outside accounting are light. Choosing Odoo there means paying for change you do not need.
A useful test: list the ten processes that cost your team the most time today. If most sit outside the general ledger, look hard at Odoo.
05 Dynamics GP to Odoo: A Migration Plan
- Inventory GP: modules in use, every add-on, customization, report and integration, plus the users of each.
- Design the chart of accounts. Keep the natural account as the Odoo account and turn department or location segments into analytic accounts, so reports by segment still work.
- Clean master data: inactive customers, vendors and items stay behind; duplicate vendor records get merged.
- Load open receivables and payables as open invoices and bills at their remaining amounts on the cutover date, and tie them to the GP aging reports.
- Load inventory by site with quantities, lots or serials and agreed costs; the total ties to the GP inventory account.
- Carry 1099 vendor details (tax ID, 1099 type) so year-end reporting continues.
- Decide how much history to move (next section).
- Close one period in parallel and go live at a fiscal year or quarter start.

06 Moving GP History Without Moving the Clutter
Finance teams usually want every transaction since 2005. Very few look at them. Pick one of three history approaches:
| Approach | What moves to Odoo | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Summary history | Monthly GL balances for two or three comparison years | You need year-over-year reporting in the new system |
| Detailed recent history | Posted invoices and bills for the current and prior year | Customer service and audits look up recent documents often |
| Read-only archive | Nothing; GP data stays in a reporting database | You need full detail for audits but rarely open it |
Most projects combine summary history in Odoo with a read-only archive of the GP database. Microsoft’s Business Central tooling follows the same idea with GL summaries plus a separate historical snapshot, which is a good sign the approach is sound.
07 Dynamics NAV: The Same Decision on a Shorter Clock
Companies on Dynamics NAV (Navision) face the same logic sooner. Microsoft lists extended support for NAV 2017 ending in January 2027 and for NAV 2018 in January 2028. Microsoft’s path is an upgrade to Business Central, which shares NAV’s roots; Odoo is the alternative when NAV has been heavily customized and you would be rebuilding those customizations anyway.
The plan above applies with one change: inventory every customized object in NAV first, because those customizations decide whether a Business Central upgrade is cheap or as large as a new implementation.
08 How to Measure the Cutover, and Common Mistakes
- Opening trial balance in Odoo equals GP at cutover, by account and analytic segment.
- AR and AP aging match GP by customer and vendor.
- Inventory quantity and value match by site.
- The first month-end close finishes within the time GP took, and the second one faster.
- Every GP add-on has a named replacement or a documented reason it is gone.
The common mistakes: choosing a vendor before listing add-ons and reports, migrating all history by default, cutting over in the middle of a fiscal year, and leaving the 2029 decision until 2029.
09 Where Devvista Fits
Devvista is a good fit for US and Canadian companies on Dynamics GP or NAV that run inventory, distribution, manufacturing or ecommerce alongside accounting and want one system. We run the inventory and fit-gap review, design the chart of accounts and analytics, migrate open AR/AP, inventory and history, rebuild critical reports and integrations, and support the first closes. When add-ons need replacing with code, our Odoo developers write upgrade-safe modules, as described in our Odoo customization guide.
If Business Central is the better fit for you, we will say so. Companies replacing several legacy tools at once may also want our QuickBooks Desktop guide and our Access replacement guide. See our Odoo implementation service, or book a call to plan your move off Dynamics GP.
